“ Absolutely not Mason, he’s too young! “
“ What are you talking about? He loves it! And it’ll be good for him to see the world, see that there’s more than just a boardwalk amusement park and backwoods! “
I of course was referencing my home away from home, Indiana Beach, and its accompanied camping grounds. Clair didn’t seem to be buying what I was selling, but I wasn’t going to give up that easy. Walking over to the fridge, of my old home and grabbing Coors light. Popping the top off of it and taking a swig, I then return to the conversation with my baby’s mother.
“ Listen Clair, nothing bad is going to happen to him. I’ll be with him the entire time, and when I’m not? When I’m out in the ring? He’ll be with people I trust. “
Taking another swig, I give her a puppy dog pleading look - one that she used to not be able to say no to, she didn’t seem to have a problem saying it now however.
“ No Manson. It’s not that I don’t trust you, your his father, and I know you only want what best. But it’s Project Honor I don’t trust, it’s Fallout, the Lesley Adora’s it’s all so fucking chaotic. And who knows what could happen when you’re in that ring to him! “
“ I could always take him out to the ring with me."
By the death stare she’s giving me, I’m guessing that didn’t help. Taking another gulp of beer, I let my eyes trail off her.
“ They’re a million-dollar company, Clair! They’re not just going to let a fucking kid get kidnapped, do you understand what that would do to them? “
Slamming down the rest of the beer, I slide it onto the counter before smacking my hand down, a bit more aggressive than I was intending too.
“ But you’re right. He is my son… And right now he’s upstairs in his bed, using my championship as a pillow. Because he fucking loves it, babe! He loves all of it, and he’s never been outside of Indiana before - let alone Australia. It’ll be good for him, I wish I could have got the fuck out of here at his age, even if it was only for a weekend. “
She crosses her arms, her face softening.
“ I don’t know Mason.”
Walking up to her, I place my hands on her shoulders, which look absurdly large due to her delicate frame and my overall size.
“ This way we won’t have to deal with me breaking his heart every time I walk out the door, come on… Give me this. “
“ No, he’ll just think he gets to go with you every time.”
Letting out a frustrated sigh, I throw my arms up in the air and turn my back on her, reaching into my pocket and pulling two cigarettes out of my pack. I light them both up and hand one to her, which she reluctantly takes with a roll of her eyes.
“ We can get to that bridge when we get there. But I need him there Clair. “
I take a long drag from the Marlboro Light, letting the smoke drift from my lips as I speak.
“ I mean, What is Guts, Gold, and Glory without its Ascension champion? Kadence Destruction. “
We continue to talk, an agreement is made and time begins to go forward, so fast that if you blinked you probably missed the transition.
White leather jacket with the tights to match, A deep sky blue with oceanic blue undertones are stitched throughout both - given it an almost space admiral inspiration. I had decided to start spending some of the money that comes with being the Ascension champion. Bare-chested and on the back deck on my former Indiana home, I stood side by side with my child - his blue eyes piercing through the camera with a cold dead stare, he really could sell. Putting my hair up in a bun, I obnoxiously chew my nicotine gum with my mouth wide open - couldn’t smoke in front of the kid.
As my arms lower back down, I let them rest on the Ascension championship, it’s a metallic plate with my name on it glistening in the glow of the moonlight, as well as the bug zapper. In Kadence’s hands, he has a pristine white rose, its petals vibrant with the lack of color. He twirls it in two fingers, his eyes never leaving the camera as a smirk spreads across my face.
Casually glancing into the lens, I circle my jaw - still feeling the effects of the light.
“ For better, or for worse… You pack quite a fucking punch, Lesley. I didn’t think you had it in you, all that hubris, that pride, that showmanship. I thought that when it just came down to it, that’s all you was. A glorified snake oil salesmen whispering into ears about how you could save them, how your light could save them. . “
Clearing my face of sweat, I couch down - the old knees popping but I ignore it, wanting to get on Kadence’s level as we both shot bullets through the camera. He inches closer to me and really mad dogs it as I let my head hang low.
“ But I was wrong, you’re more than just your bark - a lot stronger than your bite. When you came inches away from beating me, taking my title? You earned my respect, not as a person… But as a wrestler. As a man who can go out in that ring and do the damn thing. It took you a shit ton of chances, sure… But eventually, you got there… Eventually, you outlasted all the others and earned your place in front of me at Guts, Gold, & Glory. “
Kadence pulls the first petal from the rose, as I place my hands on my knees and push myself up. Taking a few steps back, leaning up against the screen door before sliding down it and taking a seat - keeping one foot on the ground and letting my forearm rest on my knee.
My son walks over, pulling the championship from my waist and taking a seat in between my legs, before placing the championship in front of him - just like we practiced. He leans his small frame up against mine, and I continue - my grin dripping with a cocky apathy.
“ I’m not going to let you get into my head Lesley, because while I can admit you’re decent in the ring - it’s in the head games where your strengths really lie. It’s what has gotten you this far, whether it be bringing up my son here, or going out of your way to smack me like I’m your dog.”
Reaching up and behind his head, Kadence sloppily runs his hand over my jaw - I grab his hand, my brick-like palms encasing it as I kiss it.
“But you think I haven’t been smacked before? You think I haven’t been talked down upon, thought lesser by people who couldn’t last a day in my shoes? I’ve been dealing with people like you my entire life. You just wear a different kind of smile, a different guise. You hide behind this light, because if you let us all see the creepy weird fuck that you truly are… Why then maybe all of your charms, lose their meaning. Maybe then we see the dark, behind all the light. “
He pulls another petal from the rose, watching as it drifts from his fingertips onto the deck of the porch. My eyes however never leave the camera, glaring into it as if it was Adora himself.
“ You’re still trying to sell all of these people on a story, that just doesn’t exist. That Christian DeMarco, that Fallout doesn’t want you holding onto this Ascension Championship of mine, that there is some sort of conspiracy stopping you from taking it. But have you ever just stopped and considered that maybe, when it just comes down to it… You don’t deserve this championship? How many fucking times have you failed, just to be rewarded with another chance? “
I couldn’t help but let a brash, downright confident chuckle escape my lips.
“ And then you try and compare us, selling the old woe is me to anyone who will listen. First, it was Winterborn, and now it’s Destruction! They don’t want Lesley Adora as their Ascension champion, they fear it! “
Rolling my eyes, I wrap my free arm around my son, holding him close as my hand rests across his chest.
“ No one fears you, Lesley, no one is trying to maliciously stop you from becoming champion. These are just stories you tell yourself and everyone else because it helps you deal with the fact that your light, isn’t a match for all my dark. Because you see I’ve given no excuses, I’ve been handed nothing. Everything I’ve done in this company in my short time is because I fucking earned it. I earned a shot at this championship on my very first night in the building! And I’ve continued to earn it with each and every match after. “
Running my hand down Kadence’s chest, I grab the Ascension Championship and place it on his shoulder - the weight of the belt causing him to slouch. He still never breaks character, never smiles, never laughs, just stares into the camera with the same fiery passion as I do.
“ But what have you earned Lesley? The only reason you’re in this match, the only reason why you are going to Australia is that you failed to beat me. You hit me with your best shot, and I still got my arm over your chest! Sure I didn’t beat you either, but I have before, I’ve thrown you in the trash and watched as the flames licked your flesh, as the light consumed you alive.
I know what It’s like to beat Lesley Adora
But you don’t know what it’s like to beat me. You don’t know what it takes, to strip me from this championship that I busted my fucking ass for. YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF THE EXTREMES I WILL GO TO KEEP THIS PAYCHECK!”
I slap the championship on Kadence’s shoulder, easing up as I connect as to not hurt him - but by his reaction or lack thereof you’d think a fly had just landed on him. He was acting tough, and I couldn’t be more proud. He pulled another petal from the rose, this time throwing it at the camera.
“You don’t know anything at all Lesley, and it’s that ignorance of reality that I’ll use to crack your fucking skull open and leave you limp in the middle of that ring. It’s the cheers of them fans… and of Kadence here that will drown out your light, will fill your head with doubt, will leave you whimpering for it to stop. Because you’ve only seen me in matches where I constantly had to watch my back, where I could never focus on one thing, because everyone wanted a spot at the table… Well I’ve got my spot, right at the head. And now? My focus is entirely on you Lesley.
And that….”
“ Is very bad! “
The little fucker stole my final line, his eyes wide as he chomps down on what’s left of the white rose and spits it out onto the ground. I follow suit and spit my gum out past the porch and run my hand through his golden hair.
“ Hey K… You wanna’ come to Australia with me and defend your championship?”
This part wasn’t rehearsed, as you can tell by the genuine shock on the face of my boy as he stands up, letting the championship fall to the floor. He wraps his arms around my neck, jumping up and down while screaming “ Yes! “.
As I embrace him in a hug, my eyes meet back up with the camera and instead of speaking I mouth these final words.
“ And Still.”
Cut the black.
“ What are you talking about? He loves it! And it’ll be good for him to see the world, see that there’s more than just a boardwalk amusement park and backwoods! “
