This was it.
This was the moment that Jason has been waiting this whole time for, and all of this talk that the former King Maverick had said about “killing the past and living for the future” was a reality. It was a bloodied battle of two men with the same tactics and the same styles but with two very different personas. Jason had spent months after months after months trying to come back and take his life from the man that stole it from him and it all paid off. All of it paid off with one final Curb Stomp down to the mat. The feeling of success was beautiful, it was glorious, there was nothing like it.
After the match, Jason barely walked through the backstage area as the backstage crew began to clean and disinfect the ring from what had occurred. The bloodstains remained after being soaked into the canvas of the ring and even through War Games, they remained there within that one ring. Jason was sided with James Raymond, Rebecca Brookes, and Hannah Rockford- and whilst some might not be on the same side as Jason, they could all agree that the man they watched get murdered in the ring was the right choice. The on-site medical staff was quick to check on Jason’s wounds, cleaning away the dried up blood upon his body and soon stitching up the wounds that were left open. On that fateful night, Jason had walked out of Sapporo Hall with sixty-one staples all over his body, just to keep the wounds closed for the time being until he reached a medical facility to receive the stitches in his body.
Some call it career suicide. Others call it a rebirth. Jason didn’t call it either thing.
Backstage of the event, Jason was left with Hannah and Rebecca as they both stood side by side with him after his match, James had gone to compete in the War Games match and might not be coming back for quite a while- depending on how fit he was to walk after it was all said and done. The television screen inside of the locker room that the three of them sat in displayed inside of the arena, showing the War Games cage being lowered and down onto the two rings placed in the middle of the ring. Hannah and Rebecca watched it all happen but Jason- he couldn’t lift his head up for the life of him. Jason wanted to watch, he wanted to see his long-time friend fight inside of the War Games but the damage was done to his body and needed to rest.
“Do you think he’ll be alright?”
Rebecca spoke with concern to her voice as she looked down onto Jason.
“Don’t worry about him. All he needs now is the rest.”
Hannah gently grabbed a hold onto Jason’s hand as he looked down onto him, his eyes closed and taking a deep breath, his hand flinching upon feeling Hannah’s touch.
“I suggest you head back to wherever… Head to Canton and prepare for his return back home if you insist.”
“Where is he going to be?”
“With me. I’m not letting him by himself. Not now anyway, it’s too soon.”
“And when will he be back?”
Hannah stands up, coming nose to nose with Rebecca.
“He’ll come back whenever the fuck he feels like coming back. Got that?”
Rebecca continues to chew on her gum as she snarls in Hannah’s direction, but she soon takes the hint and backs away, picking up her jacket and heading out of the room. Hannah is left with Jason as she crouches back down, soon taking a seat on the floor, and gently holds onto Jason’s hand but there was no flinch this time.
“You could have been nicer.”
“Don’t ask what you already know, and she knows enough right now, but let her off if I’m wrong.”
The sound of Jason sighing is almost heartbreaking to Hannah, knowing how much pain he’s in right now, barely able to take a proper breath as it is.
“Kindly be a dear and stop that nonsense, Hannah. I don’t need this right now, I don’t need any bullshit right now.”
“I know, Jay. I know. I was thinking of letting you come home to mine and let you rest there instead of backstage here.”
“What about James… I wanted to talk to him.”
“He’s in the ring right now, maybe you two can discuss things tomorrow.”
Jason just nodded his head, but very lightly, as Hannah stands back up and helps Jason back up to his feet- he almost stumbles over and falls but Hannah catches him at the last second, Hannah holds him with her arms wrapped around his waist before placing her head under his arm. Jason tries to be his stubborn self, telling himself and Hannah that he can stand and walk for himself but he almost falls back down to the floor, still not being able to find a balance in his footing. Luckily, Hannah hadn’t let go enough and was able to catch him once again as they both walked to the parking lot of Sapporo Hall. Jason’s head was full of thoughts, the thought of his own mother passing away to how he’ll be able to recover from this war he put himself through, but right now, all he needed to do was rest. Recovery time was the last thing on his mind and he really needed it.
The question now is what will 2021 hold for Jason and how much longer he can go.

You're the best worst thing that's happened to me
Don't give it up nowhere, pass it to me
Not a flash in the pan
You're a flashbang
Actually in the backseat laughing at me

ANASTASIA MAVIS-DEMPSEY
December 28th, 1980 - December 26th, 2020
A loving mother, aunt, daughter and a role model
“May she rest in peace.”
Crosstown Cemetery in Wexford Town. It was the local cemetery (or graveyard for the American viewers) in the town and it was where most of the Mavis family had been buried, and with the new addition of Anastasia to the plot of land that the family had reserved for whomever passed away in the family. The whole family had gathered to watch Anastasia join her mother and her father in the six foot grave, all of the brothers watched on with tears in their eyes, the nephews and nieces grieved with their heads dropped in sadness, her husband standing close to the hole as he dropped a rose on top of the casket before backing away and towards his children, Jason’s siblings- who were bawling their eyes out seeing their mother being buried underneath the dirt as the shovels came out and began to throw all of the soil back into the hole.
A couple of minutes passed and the family had brought themselves to the Ferrybank Hotel, a place not too far from the cemetery itself, as the family gathered to continue their grieving. Food was bought for those who had stuck around, mainly the siblings of Anastasia and her own family. Drinks were had, time was dedicated to her, and some laughs were thrown around. It was what she would have wanted, to see them smile and laugh even when she’s gone. Jason brought himself outside for a smoke, it was a desperate one that was needed after today even though a new year’s resolution was to stop smoking. It felt like pleasure inhaling the fumes and the tobacco tasted smoke into his mouth before exhaling it out and watching it fade away into the wind. Jason zoned out, letting the cigarette burn all the way down until he feels a vibration in his pocket. He reaches in, pulling out his phone and sees Rebecca calling him. It was strange seeing her call since the two haven’t spoken since that night in Japan, but Jason reluctantly answers the call.
“Hello?”
“Jason! How are you doing?”
“Like shit, to be honest.”
-and he did feel like shit, a lot of it was to blame on his own thoughts thinking that he was the one who let his mother die the way she did, but Jason knew that was him overthinking and just finding a way to blame it all on himself.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you.”
“Look, it’s best if you weren’t anyway. This is just privately for family.”
“But you know what I mean-”
“Honestly, Rebecca. Maybe we shouldn’t be like that. We’re adults, not children. None of this sneaking over to my place for a friendly visit when you knew damn well what you were doing.”
Jason took a deep breath to collect himself again.
“I’d rather make it up to you than to just- y’know- fuck and go, seeing where that takes us, shit like that. I’ve lost a lot right now and I don’t know if I can handle anything serious right now. If I change my mind about it then I do, but we’ve not been together for about two or three months at this point.”
“I’m just here to protect you, make sure you’re safe, and keep the peace around whilst you have it. You’ve not been back home in almost two weeks, and I know you’re going to be back in the states and in California on Friday. You told me you were… remember?”
“I remember.”
“At least let me help you. Please, Jason. That’s all I ask for.”
A sigh came from his mouth, but he made sure that Rebecca couldn’t hear it as he moved his phone away from his face.
“I’ll be flying back into the states tomorrow morning. Be there in Canton, and I’ll see you when I get home. Okay?”
The rest of the conversation became inaudible. Jason’s step-father soon came outside to see where he was, finding him on the phone and smoking, there was some disgust to him seeing the cigarette in his hand but he let it slide for now, he’d do the same in a situation like this. Jason hangs up and slides the phone back into his pocket, taking another drag out of the cigarette.
“Who was that?”
The voice startled Jason as he turned to see his step-father, Daniel, standing right at the door of the hotel, a slight bit of a smirk to his face as if he'd caught him doing something horrible.
“Nobody of importance. Want a bundle of sticks?”
“I thought you were giving them up?”
“I did say I would, didn’t I? Can’t really help it when you’ve a day like this.”
“They’re not good for you when you’re going to be flying around that ring and doing flips.”
Jason takes another drag out of the cigarette as his step-father spoke those words. Jason looked at him with a bit of a confused look on his face, an eyebrow raised but he’d soon drop it and flick away the ashes on the cigarette.
“Shit, that’s not even why I’m giving them up, da.”
“Why then?”
He sighed at that question.
“You know why. The same reason why you gave up as well. I did it for my ma. I made that promise the same time as you did, when we brought her back from Japan.”
“Yeah…”
Both men found themselves sitting on the bench, reflecting on their lives at this stage, but also reflecting on the past. Jason flicked the cigarette away from his hand and crushed it under his foot, then grabbing the packet of ten pack of Pall Mall reds before placing them down between himself and his step-father.
“If you’re going to smoke one, then do it now before I chuck them into the river over there.”
“You could give them to your uncle, he smokes the same pack himself.”
Jason took a minute to say or do anything before slipping the packet of cigarettes back into his pocket.
“I know we didn’t see eye to eye at first, Jason, and I understand that. I grew up not knowing how to properly show love or affection to those important-”
“Da, you used to fucking beat me. We used to beat the shit out of one another on the regular, I’m sure that affection was greatly appreciated in those punches you didn’t throw.”
Daniel sighed.
“To this day, Jason. To this fucking day. I regret ever doing that to you and you know that you bringing it up on any occasion makes me feel like shit, but you just had to bring it up today- the same day that I had to bury my wife of thirteen years. You bastard. You’re a bastard. I’m the only family you have right now, your father drowned in that river over there and your mother died to save your life, they’re gone and what do you have left?”
“...”
“Silence. That’s exactly what I expected you to even say. You don’t have anyone left in this world.”
“I don’t appreciate that you had to bring up the fact that she saved my life and risked hers being ended. I didn’t want that to be fucking implemented in my head right now, already battling my demons thinking that I was the one to blame for it all.”
His step-father scooted over closer to Jason, tearing up at the thought of it all and constantly reminding himself of what happened.
“I… I’m sorry. I guess we’re all battling our own demons, but at least you got to legitimately kill one of your demons, I got to live with mine for the rest of my life.”
“I just wished shit was normal. None of this would have happened if that was the case. I wouldn’t have had some mad fucking war criminal taking over my life if that was the case, I wouldn’t have had two versions of myself in the same world. Ma wouldn’t have died if that was the case.”
“Stop that, Jason. None of this is your fault, stop blaming yourself for it.”
“But I am, da! I am!”
Daniel slaps him across the face and Jason almost falls out of his seat from the impact.
“Stop!”
The high tone in his voice startled Jason, almost putting fear back into him, a feeling he’s not felt since he was sixteen years of age. Jason shakes off the slap and fixes himself back up in the seat as he just sits there in silence. Daniel watches his step-son sit there, not a word to be spoken and blankly staring out to the river. A tear slowly comes down Jason’s face as he continues to sit there in silence. There was fear. Fear in his eyes. That slap brought back the memories of Jason’s childhood, and even at twenty-three years of age, he’s petrified- if not traumatized by his past.
“Jason…”
He doesn’t even turn his head when his name is called out-
“I’m sorry…”
-like going from one ear and out the other-
“Please, Jason. I’m sorry!”
-but this time it leaves Jason to slowly turn his head around to face his step-father. Tears running down his face as he continues to sit there in silence, but acknowledge his apology in a manner. Daniel grabs a hold of Jason, embracing him with a hug as he wraps his arms around him. The two men sit there, weeping in the moment and fully embracing everything that’s happened in the recent weeks. After two whole years, they finally got to see eye to eye with one another again. There was no bad side to Jason, this was himself, who he truly is.

Not too slick, no, you're not too subtle
Windows down, get loud when we're going through the tunnel
Trip and I slip in the puddle
Want my heart for a moment
But you don't wanna hold it
So you damn near froze it
Feel I'm decomposing
Almost went down on a knee, D Rose it
