YURIKO TOYAMA [V.O.]: “Come on, fight through!”
“Please!”
“Just grab the rope! Hold on!”
“No!!!”
“Yes!”
YURIKO TOYAMA: “AHHH OH NOO-Ahh!”
“Nononono stay away over there don’t-”
Two of Fallout’s newest competitors, Carny Sinclair and Yuriko Toyama, begin to stir. It looks as if Carny is going to take full advantage of his stunned opponent as he lifts Toyama off her feet and carries her towards the ropes. Not to be outdone by Hendrix, Michael Bishop sees this as a golden opportunity, and he grabs Carny to give him extra momentum, sending both competitors over the top rope.
“No, Yuriko! No don’t do that you’re gonna get-”
“AHHHHHH NOOOOO!!!”
CARNY SINCLAIR AND YURIKO TOYAMA HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED BY MICHAEL BISHOP
YURIKO TOYAMA: “.....I thought I could will myself to win it….”
The voice of KENJI over their Skype call chuckles with a smile as Yuriko bonks her head down onto the desk, only moving her head off the keyboard after she’s already typed a long line of “b” into the chat. The footage of the Tyrant's Crown Battle Royal playing from the Project: Honor Network as more competitors are eliminated.
KENJI: “This isn’t a video game, Yuri…”
YURIKO TOYAMA: “Sometimes I wish it was….Do you think I could have won that match?”
KENJI: “Of course I do, Yuri. Every time you go out there, I don’t just think you can win. I know that you can. But one of the cruel realities of pro wrestling is that sometimes it doesn’t go your way, and it’s hard to find a reason why. You can do everything right….but the world isn’t on the same page. Either way, you can’t let it get to you. Sure, it was a loss. But you’re far from out. You were really impressive in your debut and survived a pretty long time against some strong competition. You should be proud”.
YURIKO TOYAMA: “I guess you’re right. When you’re right, you’re right……I just….I think what I thought this would be, it’s something different. Maybe I convinced myself that I could be in a deathmatch every night and have fun like that. I thought it would be like the matches back home, the ones that your shows have”.
KENJI: “Which does not sound like the plan for a good or lengthy career…”
YURIKO TOYAMA: “.....I miss home….I’ve only been gone a month and I miss home so much”.
KENJI: “I know, Yuri. It’s really tough. I had the same feeling when I started my career in The States too. Everything feels different, settling in on the road just doesn’t happen. Sounds cliche, but I get it".
YURIKO TOYAMA: “Would rather have a great career for...five years than go through the motions for twenty. It did take a really scary guy to eliminate me, I guess….”
YURIKO: “Yeah, I won my debut, but since then it hasn’t been going well. I wasn’t expecting to be winning everything….I don’t know. It’s harder than I thought it was. Everyone here is so eager to succeed on their own and only for themselves”.
KENJI: “You need to be like that too sometimes, Yuri. It’s a harsh truth about what we love. Even for the guys that make it all look effortless. They put in their graft before that time to get there, whether they’re selfish about it or not. You’ll get your time, Yuri, I know it. It’s still early days”.
YURIKO: “But I-“
KENJI: “And before you say it, a deathmatch isn’t going to magically make it happen”.
Yuriko pouts and huffs for a moment before curling up in her chair, pulling her knees to her chest.
YURIKO: “It still could….You taught me that anything is possible in puroresu….”
KENJI: “…..Yes…but I didn’t mean that as just a positive, Yuri. Anything can happen for both your betterment and not, it’s just how it is. I want you to succeed in every way that is possible. You’ve only scratched the surface of what you’re capable of. I don’t want you to stumble and linger over the small setbacks when you have so much ahead of you”.
“What’s your next match?”
YURIKO: “A Pub Brawl match, I don’t know what St. Patrick’s Day is though”.
KENJI: “I mean, that’s close to a deathmatch. No rules; get to smash glass over people’s faces, waterboard them under the beer pumps, use the bar tables as weapons”.
YURIKO: “Yeah, I guess….”
KENJI: “Ok, think of it this way. Win or lose, you’ll do well. Even if you don’t think so right now. You’re great and can capitalise on your amazing potential. Being down about it, that’s ok. It won’t always be that way.
You wouldn’t have been signed if that weren’t the case. I wouldn’t have put your name forward otherwise”.
YURIKO: “….It’s your name too, of course you would choose me….I don’t want people to think that I’m only here because you were successful in America”.
“...I want to go home…”
The call falls silent for a moment while Yuriko’s eyes droop slightly.
KENJI: “Yuri….home is always one phone call away. Anytime you want to come visit, or just come back….I’ll make it happen. Or I can come to you on the next flight-”.
YURIKO: “I do want to be here, I do….it’s just….I don’t want to come home sad like you did”.
The silence emerges again, with the wise words of KENJI falling back to a very different time in his career. He gives a pained smile to Yuriko through the video call.
KENJI: “….I’d like to say you won’t ever be like that. I made a lot of mistakes, Yuri. Coming back to Japan wasn’t one of them. Even if they’re not grand memories that I look fondly on, they’re memories, nonetheless. I wouldn’t be me today without them. Bad times don’t last, but bad guys do. And you are most definitely not a bad guy. As long as you’re careful with what you do, even if being reckless is what makes you happy. You’re allowed to have fun while you’re over there. Take the bad with the good, remember them both and let it fuel you”.
“Ask yourself what you’ll do about it.
YURIKO: “Thanks, Kenji”.
KENJI: “Any time. I’m always here for you. I’ll make sure Tetran Kai support you too. Have you met any of them yet?”
YURIKO: “No, not yet”.
KENJI: “Have you really been out of that apartment for anything that isn’t your matches?”
Yuriko sheepishly tucks herself into a tighter ball, not saying anything.
KENJI: “You’re gonna hate me for saying this right now, but you need to get some fresh air every now and then. I can come visit you, but it would be good if you made some friends over there”
“Put yourself out there, I’m sure they’ll love you”.
“You’ll be in your element. That’s where you’ll show the world who you really are".
"Win or lose”.

Jeff lets out an audible sigh just caught on the boom mic, thoroughly unconvinced that Yuriko has even seen what the Fallout roster really is, with all the psychopaths and insane people walking the halls.
JEFF: “Who have you talked to that’s like that agai-”.
YURIKO: “What if I actually win it though?! Jeff! I could win and be a champion already! Wouldn’t that be awesome!?”
JEFF: “Yes! Yes! That would be awesome-jeez”.
YURIKO: "It's ok, we can do this. We can do this....
"Boyde won the match last time around. And he's already won this belt before right? He's gonna be really super tough. Like, super ultra mega tough. There's something about deathamtch wrestlers here in the States, they seem to not care as much, but that only makes them stronger! Jeff! Is the secret to success not caring? That doesn't sound right..."
Jeff: "....."
"Anyway, I want to prove to him that I can be just as good with weapons and violence! The championship is cool and all...but I um....I don't feel ready for that. I want to show that I can survive just as much punishment as all the tough guys here".
"Like Henry Hyde Lee? Lee Henry Henry? Hen Hen Lee Lee? You know the guy, that guy. He's extra tough, but he's like that in a different way. Kenji-san would hire guys like him to work in Japan and they'd always beat each other up. More than hardcore stuff. Why is he on Fallout?"
JEFF: "...He got traded to Fallout with the Gatekeeper Championship...."
YURIKO: "Oooooohhh, that makes sense....wait...THAT MEANS HE'S NOT A DEATHMATCH EXPERT LIKE ME! Ok ok ok ok, this is where I can get my advantage. He's really strong and scary, and is already the champion. That's all good stuff for him, but he's out of his normal comfort zone in here. And with a crazy guy like Earl Boyde in the game too....maybe I can learn something from him in the match. Maybe he could even become my new mentor or something..."
Although wordless, Jeff is far beyond his level of tolerance for Yuriko's innocent, but massively naive plans for the upcoming match. With a laboured pause, he makes himself as the question.
JEFF: "Do you know the stipulation for this match, Yuriko?"
YURIKO: "Yeah, it's a deathmatch this time".
JEFF: "I mean, sort of? Not really. It's a Go To Sleep Match".
Yuriko blinks and stares into the lens of the camera again, her eyes burnign right through the camera into Jeff's soul.
YURIKO: "Like....like the move?"
JEFF: "No no no, like....actually going to sleep".
YURIKO: "Ohhh...."
JEFF: "...with syringes..."
YURIKO: "OOOHHHH!! Thatsoundssofunihavetowinthismatchimreallyreallygoodatstayingawake!!"
She scrabbles closer to the camera and is practically staring down the barrel of the lens as the frame shakes with Jeff's recoiling.

"It's a long way from home, but I want and need the competition to become better. And I will become better! Lightning Blue will put them all to sleep faster than they can think, and maybe not this day, but one day, I will become Gatekeeper Champion!"
"This slumber party will only have one person standing by the end!"

UNAIRED FOOTAGE
Fallout XXII: Spring Break
Moments After the Pub Brawl's Conclusion
Fallout XXII: Spring Break
Moments After the Pub Brawl's Conclusion
A shaking camera sways its way through the backstage area of Fallout, squeezing through the hallways and small crowds of backstage technical staff, and meandering wrestlers. It turns a corner and zooms in to see the small frame of Yuriko Toyama. Her blue gear and skin are caked with blood, both her own and others. With glass shards grated over her stomach, a singeing mark over the edges of the gear, although she is thankfully no longer on fire. However, around her neck is still the outline of the drywall that's she's just taken with her and not bothered to actually remove.
Funnily enough, for someone who took as much punishment as she did, Yuriko is energetically pacing around the hallway with a cell phone held up to her ear.
YURIKO: "Oh my god, Kenji-oniisan, that was amazing!!!! It was so cool, I got thrown through a wall!"
As she listens to the response on the other end of the phone, she pulls a small sliver of glass from her arm, with the smallest flinch on her face. She leans over to spit a messy glob of bloody spit into a nearby trash can, still elated at the match that just happened.
YURIKO: "I have to do that again! Doesn't even need to be me winning, that was so fun! I knew this is what I wanted to do, but now I'm definitely sure! I'm gonna be a deathmatch wrestler! Thank you for believing in me".
"The next one is going to be even better! I just know it!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---| AAAHHHH |---
YURIKO: “AHHHH! WHAT!!! It’s a title match?!?!”
The cameraman, Jeff, fumbles his steady hand as Yuriko gets alarmingly close to the camera in her surprise and excitement. As energetic as she can be, Yuriko isn’t the most aware of personal space. He almost drops the camera completely, but manages to make a last minute catch, saving Project: Honor finance department quite the replacement invoice.
JEFF: “Yes! Ye-Shit! It’s a title match, Yuriko!!”
YURIKO: “Wow! That’s so cool! But the guy with the belt….he’s kinda….scary. Other wrestlers I’ve talked to on Fallout have all been so nice and encouraging. But he’s a bit serious and stuff…..”
