It was a dark, stormy night. Rain was coming down so hard, you could barely see what’s right in front of you. The wind was blowing so fiercely, the trees would sway a little too much. The wind was blowing so fast, it almost sounded as if it was singing a song. Lightning struck down nearby, just barely missing a tree. Suddenly, you hear the sound of leaves rustling a lot, as if someone was running through them. Sure enough, you can see a lady running as fast as she can with a blanket wrapped around something that’s not quite visible. She keeps looking behind her as if to make sure no one’s following her. In the distance you can see little red lights moving rapidly closer. The closer they get, the more visible they are and
After some time of running, she starts to lose her breath and pauses for a second. The woman hides in some bushes with the blanket and whatever is wrapped in it is held closely to her. Men in full armor, riding horses, and carrying torches speed past them without noticing their location. As they passed, the woman steps out and looks everywhere to make sure no one else is around. Suddenly, footsteps are heard right behind the woman and as she turns around, a horse lifts up onto it’s back legs. All that’s heard before the screen goes black is the echo of the woman’s scream.
“Wait, hold up. You expect me to believe this shit? Why are you playing with me, man?”
The sound of laughter brings us to a cabin in the woods with two men sitting by the fire outside. It is night, but the weather is clear and the wind is still. One of the men is laughing uncontrollably while the other, fully tatted all over, has a drink in hand and looks unamused. The man that’s laughing calms down to a slight chuckle.
“Man, why are you wanting to know this anyways? I thought you liked things how they were?”
The tattooed man sat and took a sip of his drink. Silence struck for a solid eight seconds before he lowered his glass again.
“Just trying to put things into perspective, reminiscing if you will.”
“The hell is in that drink? This doesn’t sound like you.”
The tattooed man took a sip of his drink again.
“You know what, you’re right. This isn’t like me. I’m gonna head to bed. I suggest you do the same.”
The tattooed man chugs the rest of his drink, walks inside, then collapses onto his bed. The second he closes his eyes, the screen goes dark again.
The frozen tundra of the Western Arctic was quite the beautiful sight to see. Most of the water surrounding the land was iced over besides a few cracks and places where the bears would dive in and go for a swim. A man can be seen emerging from the water with no shirt or jacket on and just wearing pants. His entire body is tatted and after emerging from the water, he pulls his hair back behind him. You have now been introduced to Dex Griffin. Dex turns around and whistles.
“Well, are you coming?” He shouted.
Right after, a massive polar bear also emerges from the water and runs up next to him.
Looking directly at the bear, Dex says, “Alistair, buddy, did I just beat you?”
Alistair is the name of the bear that towers over Dex currently. Cool story actually, Dex and Alistair basically grew up together. That’s another part of the story.
“Alright, what’s next? I only have another thirty minutes before I gotta head back.”
Alistair starts dancing, which is a funny sight to see. He’s doing the wave with his arms and moving his hips around.
“You’re joking, right? You want to dance right now?”
Unfazed, Alistair doesn’t miss and bit and continues on. Dex lets out a deep sigh and starts dancing with him. This goes on for a few minutes before Dex pauses.
A very small roar comes from Alistair as if expressing he’s sad.
Dex forms a comforting look on his face and starts petting Alistair on the head. “I know buddy. I’ve been very busy lately and we haven’t been able to spend much time together. I’ll tell you what, though… If you can beat me in a wrestling match, I’ll bring you with me where I’m headed.”
Immediately, Alistair tackles Dex and holds one paw on his chest. Dex just lays there, shirtless, but somehow still not freezing. He pushes Alistair’s paw away and gets back to his feet.
“Alright, alright, you got me. Hang out around here for a bit and when I’m ready I’ll come get you. I hope you liked closed spaces.”
Alistair takes a seat next to him as Dex pets him a little more. He stops and then starts to walk away. A loud roar from Alistair is heard.
“Easy buddy, I’ll be back soon, I promise.”
Dex continues to walk away and comes up on a four-wheeler. He turns it on, revs it up and starts the drive away. Alistair looks on as Dex goes out of sight. The sky was clear today and just a bit chilly which still doesn’t seem to bother Dex. His hair is flowing behind him with the wind as he climbs hills. Noorvik is just a few minutes away from his current location which is where he camps out when he’s visiting Alistair. He drives up to a cabin just outside of town that is quite small. Dex parks the four-wheeler, walks up to the door, opens it and walks inside. Immediately after walking in, he gets in front of the fireplace and places some new logs inside. Dex gets the fire started and then sits at his chair directly in front of it.
During this time, many thoughts filled Dex’s head; how different life has been since the video of him wrestling a bear went viral, his new wrestling gig, and how he’s going to get Alistair from Alaska down to St. Elmo, Colorado. Dex leans forward, places his hands in front of the fire and closes his eyes. Not but seconds later, he grabs his phone, clicks on a contact and the phone starts ringing.
“Hello?” The person on the other line sounded like another grown man and could almost tell in his voice alone that he knew something was up.
In a smoldering tone, Dex states, “I need a huge favor.”
“It’s never just a simple ‘hey’ from you is it? Always something when you call.”
“Better than nothing, right?”
“I wouldn’t go-“ Dex interrupted him before he could go much further.
“I need to get Alistair down to St. Elmo. Are you going to help?”
The man on the other line asks in a confused tone, “Colorado? The hell for?”
“I’m sure you’ve heard, but I signed a contract to this wrestling company called Project: Honor. My first match is at their next PPV called Unbreakable Resolution and it’s taking place in Denver, Colorado. The match I’m in, though, is in St. Elmo.”
“Why the hell is-“ Dex interrupted once again.
“Look, can you help or not? We can talk later.”
Silence strikes for a solid five seconds before the man on the other line says his next bit.
“Alright, something like this doesn’t come cheap, I hope you know that.”
Dex forms a grin and chuckles slightly. “You’ll get your money.”
“You and Alistair better be ready by dusk.” The man on the other line hung up before Dex could say anything.
In that moment, Dex placed his hands over his face and leaned forward. He knew that the next couple days were going to be hell and he’d have to do everything in his power to remain cool, especially transporting a polar bear across the country and out of it’s habitat. He was hoping for a smooth ride, but while Alistair is a very relaxed and friendly polar bear, he knows that at any second, he could snap. Dex took a few minutes to just chill by the fire and gathered a few things before stepping out of the cabin again. He locked the doors and then pulled out his phone, opened an app, pressed a button and then we hear a voice.
”Security measures have been applied.”
Dex then puts his phone up, starts the four-wheeler up and rides into the distance.
It looked just like any other abandoned town. There were abandoned houses, businesses, gas stations, cars, etc. The difference was, this was only a small town to begin with. Maybe a couple thousand residents before it was abandoned. Car doors were open, random objects just sat in the middle of the street. It almost looks as if no one’s come through in a while. Most of the windows from the cars are iced over considering it’s below thirty degrees at the moment. The sun is starting to set and the sky becomes a pinkish orange color. A man, tatted from neck down walks out from one of the houses and stands in the middle of the road. He turns his head towards the camera, revealing the man to be Dex Griffin.
“Man, do you people follow me all the time now?”
The camera moves up and down as if to answer Dex’s question with a yes.
“That’s pretty annoying, not gonna lie. Wait-“
Dex gets closer to the camera and forms a concerned look on his face.
“Do you watch like… all the time?”
Quickly, the cameraman shakes the camera side to side.
“Well obviously I’m new to this shit, so how does this work exactly?”
The cameraman just shrugs his shoulders.
“You’re telling me that you don’t know, yet you’re the one following me around with a camera? The fuck kinda business is this?”
Dex gets close enough to the cameraman so that all you can see is half his face and hair. The cameraman flinches a little bit. Dex starts to laugh while backing away.
“I’m just yankin’ your chain, man. I know how this shit works. You should’ve seen the look on your face, though. For a second there I thought you shit yourself.”
Dex sniffs around where the cameraman is and then backs away again.
“Hmm, I guess it’s just your upper lip. Anyways, I guess I should formerly introduce myself? Maybe I’ll just wait until the end. What do you think, man?”
The cameraman shrugs his shoulders again.
“Figured, you don’t know shit. I’ll just wait until the end. You know, I enjoyed my life before fame and this shit now. Lived a simple life of hunting for food, staying away from civilization and just enjoying the wilderness. Ever since some wack job caught a video of me wrestling with Alistair and it went viral, shit just hasn’t been the same. People somehow find where I live and send me weird things. This is exactly why I secluded myself from civilization. Now, though, I’m somewhat of a celebrity and have been told to embrace it. Embracing it means to do commercials, model for businesses, speak from time to time for people… like it’s just too much sometimes. It’s my life now, so I’ll just pull the tampon out and take it like a champ.”
Dex starts to walk down the abandoned street of St. Elmo. The cameraman didn’t move until Dex turned around and waved him on.
“Now I got this wrestling shit I have to start focusing on, too? This one falls on me, though. I had people tell me to continue modeling and take more videos of myself in the wild. I couldn’t sell myself short like that, so instead, I found an alternative. If I can wrestle a polar bear, I sure as hell can wrestle some humans. Figured this would be better than posing half naked anymore or interrupting the peacefulness that is the forests, the arctic, and so on. So long story short, that’s how I ended up here. Project: Honor reached out to me actually and after taking it into consideration, I pulled the trigger. When I heard I was debuting at this Pay-Per-View and the match I was in, man did I get all tingly inside.”
Dex halts the cameraman and stops at a general store. Both doors are closed until they get closer and one of the doors slowly opens.
“Just like the feeling when you’re around some supernatural shit. I heard this place was abandoned a hundred years ago because of the mining industry declining, but I didn’t dive too deep into the history. I saw some headlines about ghosts and got even more excited. You think I’d give up the opportunity of seeing some crazy shit go down? Hell nah. You get a bunch of people around here disturbing the peace and you’re gonna regret it. I regret nothing in my life. If something bad happens, fuck it and move on. Not much it’s going to do dwelling over it. I also feel like everything I do, I do for a reason. Which brings me to my next point.”
After walking into the store, Dex just casually walks around without a worry in the world. The cameraman slacks behind him, noticeably scared.
“I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m here in St. Elmo almost a week before the show even happens. While most of these idiots are in the ring training, I decided to come to the purge zone, where it’s all about to go down. Do you see a fucking wrestling ring here? Anywhere? I didn’t think so. I’m learning the environment and preparing some surprises for when that purge alarm goes off and all hell breaks loose out here. Something about the thought of a massacre just really gets a man going, ya know? All the blood that’s going to be spilled, how many britches are gonna be shat in, and just the sheer thought of sending someone through a fucking window. It just makes me want to sound that alarm myself and get the party started.”
Dex continues looking around the store, as if looking for something specific.
“I’m not going to bother going into detail on each person in this match because that’s just a waste of time. We’re all about to be involved in something brand new for all of us I’m sure, if not then most of us. You truly have very little control over what happens after that alarm sounds. It’s more wits and strength than being quick and agile in the ring. What do I know, though? It’s not like I’m a professional or anything. I know a lot of you are gonna try to act tough and say some crazy shit like ending someone’s career and all that blah blah shit. Or what that one chick said on Twitter, talking about she’s going to purge me from existence-“
Dex starts laughing uncontrollably. After a few moments, he gathers himself to a slight chuckle.
“That’s enough right there. You clowns are in for a surprise. St. Elmo isn’t just a ghost town or an abandoned town. It’s the perfect scene for…”
Dex looks directly into the camera with a perfect smile.
“The Perfect Disaster.”
Not even a second after, the scene cuts out completely.
