Immediately after The Crowning
[The scene opens to the sight of Mikey Hero walking from the nurse’s station set up in the backstage area of the Wells Fargo Center, his ribs heavily taped due to the assault from the Nation of Incarceration. However rather than a grimace of pain, Mikey looks elated, an ear to ear grin plastered on his face as he bee-bops his way to his locker room. Once he makes it to the door he opens it to see three people, Charles, Ashley and Cedric Strong sitting in his room. Charles sits in a metal chair in the middle of the room in his usual expensive looking three piece suit, his demeanor seems apprehensive as Cedric and Ashley sit on a bench with lockers behind them, both trying to avoid eye contact with their boss.]
Mikey Hero: “Did you guys see me out there?”
[Mikey blurts out as he walks into the room, possibly a little louder than he should have.]
Mikey Hero: “I was like…Bam!...Pow!...Take that, and that!”
[Mikey strikes at the air as he talks, simulating a fight, he kicks his leg up with the last words before grabbing at his ribs, finally succumbing to the pain. As Mikey takes a moment to catch his breath Charles stands up. He rubs his hands down the front of his suit jacket to press out the wrinkles before beginning to speak.]
Charles: “Yes, but you lost.”
[Mikey looks a little shocked, still grasping at his ribs as Charles takes a step closer to him, his face growing even sterner, Mikey looks over to the bench as he sees Ashley looking down at the tile on the floor shaking her head.]
Charles: “And losses do not equate to money. Losing does not reflect well on the Watkins name, a name you represent every time you step into that win? Do you think I’m the kind of person who tolerates losing? Do you think I would be where I’m at today if I was okay with losing?”
[Mikey gives Charles a blank stare, not having enough strength to muster much else, he looks at Cedric and Ashley, looking for some help in the situation as both continue to avoid eye contact. Tension grows in the room as Mikey turns his attention back to Charles and shrugs his shoulders.]
Mikey: “I mean you can’t win them all. I thought I did pretty good for only my second match, I even eliminated DJ Hunter, and I would’ve done even better if that big oaf hadn’t snuck up behind me.”
[Charles shakes his head in disgust.]
Charles: “Unacceptable, even if you can’t as you say win them all, I told you from day one, money is the number one objective, If you want my continued support in this little childish endeavor of yours, you’ll have to find a way to increase your worth, promote yourself, gain some sort of sponsorship. Show me the money or you can take your ass back to that shitty little apartment with your whore mother.”
[Ashley gasps at Charles’ words as Cedric shakes his head in disgust beside her. Mikey’s face turns red as he balls his fists up with his arms by his sides.]
Mikey: “Fuck you.”
Charles: “What?”
[Charles exclaims in a stern face as Mikey takes a step closer to him.]
Mikey: “You heard me.”
[Charles raises his hand back as Mikey flinches, an involuntary reaction to his boss’s aggression. Before Charles can follow through with a swift back hand though, Big Ced stands up.]
Cedric: “Enough!”
[He shouts as Charles turns toward him, Cedric stares Charles down for a moment before Charles puts his hand down, composing himself before letting out a loud huff.]
Charles: “Very well, you straighten him out.”
[Charles bumps past Mikey on his way out the room as Ashley continues to stare at the floor, tears of anger beginning to well up in her eyes. Mikey stares at the door Charles just exited, his fists shaking in anger as Cedric places his hand on Mikey’s shoulder. Mikey turns to face the big man, his body still shaking.]
Cedric: “It’s alright kid. Charles just has a tendency to fly off the handle sometimes, but he’s mostly harmless.”
[Mikey stares at Cedric for a moment, trying to quell his anger before slowly nodding his head in understanding.]
Cedric: “Now listen, you can’t win them all, but what Charles doesn’t understand is in the business winning isn’t everything. You gotta be able to promote yourself, sell your brand to the audience, make them want to buy Mikey Hero merch. That’s why I’ve arranged a sit-down interview with Project Honor’s Crystal Ward. That's your chance to tell the people what you're all about, get them on your side, kid, what do you say?”
[Mikey looks nervous, speaking to people obviously not being his strong suit, Mikey simply nods before arching his head around Cedric to look at Ashley.]
Mikey: “I mean you’ll be there right?”
[Ashley’s head shoots up as she turns her attention toward Mikey in surprise.]
Mikey: “I mean I just feel more comfortable when you're around so I’d really appreciate it if you were there.”
[Cedric and Mikey both look at Ashley for an awkward moment awaiting an answer before Ashley wipes the tears from her eyes and shakes her head to the surprise of the two men in front of her.]
Ashley: “I don’t know about that, I mean i’m pretty busy, and now that Charles is upset i;m sure he’ll find even more work for me to do. So I really don’t think I'll have the time.”
[Mikey hangs his head in shame, knowing he’s the reason for their boss’s ire, and as a result the added stress Ashley is now feeling.]
Mikey: “Sorry.”
[Ashley stands up and wipes her tears once more as she half-heartedly nods, essentially dismissing his apology.]
Ashley: “It’s fine, I just have to go.”
[Ashley walks quickly past the two men standing by the door and swings it open, quickly disappearing behind it as Mikey watches her leave. He continues to stare at the door for a moment, waiting to see if she’ll come back. She doesn’t as Cedric pats Mikey’s shoulder, trying to console him as the scene fades.]
Creating History
[The scene reopens to a room inside Watkins Tower, a makeshift interview space with green curtains on each of the four walls. We see Mikey sitting in a metal chair, wearing black jeans and a Black shirt with a picture of him standing on the second rope outside of a wrestling ring, with blue letters on the shirt that read, “I need a Hero”. Sitting directly opposite of him is Proving Ground interviewer, Crystal Ward.]
Crystal: “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I’m here today with Project Honor’s newest Acquisition, Mikey Hero. Mikey, how are you?”
[Mikey simply nods with half a smile etched on his face, he rubs his hands on his knees, a nervous tick he’s had for as long as he can remember.]
Crystal: “First off I’d like to say congratulations on your impressive showing in the battle royale for the Tyrant’s Crown at, The Crowning two.”
[Mikey gives a quick nervous looking nod before responding.]
Mikey: “Thank you.”
[Mikey mutters so quickly that Crystal almost doesn’t catch it, she waits a moment to see if he’ll say anything else before continuing.]
Crystal: “Unfortunately you came up short in that match, making it to the final five before being eliminated by Michael Bishop.”
[Mikey Scoffs, cutting Crystal off before she can ask a question.]
Mikey: “Yeah, classic third-partier.”
[Crystal looks at Mikey in confusion.]
Crystal: “Third partier?”
[Mikey nods quickly.]
Mikey: “Yeah, so like you know in Fortnite when you're in a shootout with somebody, and somebody else comes around and starts shooting at you while you’re distracted? That’s called third partying, and that’s exactly what Michael Bishop did. I had just eliminated DJ Hunter, and I had Kyle Valentine on the ropes til Brandon Hendrix snuck around and stole my moment, then Bishop snuck up behind me and threw me but. It’s fine I guess though, that’s the name of the game, although honestly I hope one day to get in there one on one with Michael Bishop and see how good he really is in a one on one situation.”
[Crystal nods, obviously not fully understanding Mikey’s diatribe, but choosing to move forward.]
Crystal: “Well it seems like that match will have to wait, however you do have a match this week at Proving Ground thirty-one, at the XL Center in Hartford Connecticut against John Blade, your thoughts?”
[Mikey’s hands begin to move quickly up and down his legs as sweat begins to drip from his brow.]
Mikey: “Yeah…ummm…Well…”
[Crystal can see the nervousness on Mikey’s face as she tries to calm him.]
Crystal: “Are you okay? Do you need water?”
[Mikey gulps hard as Crystal motions to the camera man to get a bottle of water, the camera man walks out one of the side curtains to fetch a water. The two sit awkwardly waiting, as the man comes back with the water Mikey looks toward the curtain to see a familiar face behind the camera man. Ashley is standing behind the curtain wearing black dress pants and the same shirt as Mikey, she gives him a thumbs up as Mikey smiles, elated that she made time to be there for him. The man gives Mikey the water before walking back behind the camera, Mikey stares at the curtain with a goofy smile etched across his face before Crystal breaks him from his trance like state.]
Crystal: “Mr. Hero? Thoughts on your match with John Blade?”
[Mikey shoots his head toward Crystal’s direction before nodding and setting his water down on the floor.]
Mikey: “Right, well honestly, I’m a fan of Mr. Blade. He’s the kind of guy I look up to, a guy who never backs down no matter the odds, honestly John and myself were probably the two most underestimated competitors in our match at the Crowning. With literal demons like Havoc in the match I can;t say I blame people, that being said I’d like to think we both held our own pretty well, we both impressed quite a few people, and we showed everyone exactly why we’re here. Exactly why we do this.”
[Mikey looks over toward the curtain Ashley is standing behind after his last words before continuing.]
Mikey: “We’re here to create history, to show everyone that no matter what obstacles you may face in your life, if you believe in yourself you can accomplish whatever you set your heart toward. And this Friday night Myself and Mr. John Blade will do it once again, we will create history and make people stand and take notice of us, the regular joes, the men who fight for what they believe in and never back down. So John, win, lose or draw here’s to creating history.”
[With that Mikey stands up and walks off as the scene fades.]
