“Mikey Hero? What kind of name is that?”
[The scene opens in the office of Charles S. Watkins, as he sits behind a rather large mahogany desk, dressed for work in a classy three-piece suit. On the opposite side of the desk sits the former Mikey Henson, henceforth known as, Mikey Hero. Mikey is sitting slightly slumped in an office chair, he is wearing a plain white T-shirt which appears to be two sizes too large for him, along with a pair of worn-out blue jeans.]
Watkins: “I mean when I told you, you could pick your own ring name I figured you’d go with something fearsome, Steve Savage, or Mikey Merciless. Something that will strike fear into the hearts of your Opponents.”
[Mikey shrugs, keeping his attention on the floor as he begins to speak.]
Mikey:” Uhh I don’t know, I mean you told me winners don’t need heroes, so I guess I thought if I wanted to be a winner, I would just have to be my own hero. Mikey Hero.”
[Mikey says the last words triumphantly as he finally looks up at Charles for the first time, who appears to be only half listening to the young man as he ruffles through some papers on his desk.]
Watkins: “Yes, well no matter, we're stuck with the name now. Onto more important business, it’s time we worked out the details on this little arrangement of ours.”
[Charles pauses waiting for Mikey to respond, Mikey simply nods as he scoots around in his chair a little, looking uncomfortable as Charles continues.]
Watkins: “As I’ve already informed you, I will receive sixty percent of all finances acquired by the client, that’s you. This includes merchandise and royalties.”
[Charles stares at Mikey waiting for him to acknowledge the agreement, Mikey shakes his head, as if he were in a daze, before sitting up straight once again and nodding.]
Mikey: “Right, I don’t care about the money, I’m just glad I get to actually live my dream of being a Pro Wrestler, thank you once again sir.”
[Charles gives a half-hearted smile and nods as he continues.]
Watkins: “Now, as your manager, and Liaison, you will be representing the Watkins name. A name I worked hard to build until my own personal brand, a name I take great pride in. A name I won’t let be sullied by some snot-nosed kid who doesn’t know what he’s doing. As such, all your training will be done here, on-site. I’ll also need you to stay here at Watkins Tower for the duration of our arrangement as we manage your professional training, as well as social media presence, and general media etiquette.”
[Mikey begins to cough, getting choked up by Charles’ bombshell he just dropped on him.]
Mikey: “Live here? You want me to live here? I’m not sure that’ll work sir, what about school? What about my mom?”
[Charles just stares blankly at Mikey, unfazed by his sudden erratic line of questioning.]
Watkins: “School? I assumed you were eighteen, that’s what it says on your license.”
[Mikey’s gaze once again darts to the ground as he rubs the back of his neck with his right hand, a nervous tick he developed long ago.]
Mikey: “Uhh well I am, but the thing is…Well you see, Mr. Watkins, I got held back in the eighth grade because Danny Mitchell, that’s the Quarterback at my school. Well Danny gave me an atomic wedgie so bad in the eighth grade I had to miss six months of school to recover, so I fell behind and got held back. So even though I’m eighteen I still have one more semester before I graduate.”
[Charles continues to stare blankly at Mikey for a moment before his stoic demeanor breaks as he bursts into laughter.]
Watkins: “Hahaha, Atomic wedgie? Hahahahah! Jesus son.”
[Mikey’s face turns red from embarrassment.]
Mikey: “It’s not that funny, it really hurt.”
[Mikey rubs the back of his pants, remembering the pain from all those years ago as Charles takes a moment to finally compose himself, returning back to his usual stoic nature.]
Watkins: “Yes well we will have to figure out an arrangement that works best for all parties involved in that particular situation, now as far as your mother.”
[Charles smiles, as he reaches into one of his desk drawers and pulls out a big phone book, he plops it down on top of his desk and begins to flip through the pages as Mikey gets anxious and begins to look around for something else to hold his attention. Mikey looks out the window of Charles’ office, looking out into the lobby of Watkins tower, as Mikey stares out into the large lobby, he sees something that catches his eye as he hears Charles mumbling in the background.]
Watkins: ‘Here we go, Jennifer Hensen.”
[Mikey takes little note of his mother’s name being mentioned as he continues to stare at the young woman walking across the lobby, she is wearing a black pantsuit, her red hair tied back in a ponytail. Mikey is entranced by the woman as he continues walking across the room, he barely catches Charles, and his mother’s conversation on the phone.]
Watkins: “How does a million dollars sound?”
[Mikey watches as the young lady finally makes it to the front desk, walking around and sitting behind it as she reaches into the drawer and pulls a nameplate out, setting it in front of her on the desk, Mikey reads the name Ashley on the plaque. Ashley looks into Charles’ office, seeing Mikey who quickly darts his gaze away as his heart begins to pound, worried that he’s been caught awkwardly staring at a complete stranger, Mikey doesn’t have much time to process his current situation however as his phone begins to vibrate in his pocket. Mike pulls his phone out noticing a text message from his mother, Mikey opens the message.]
“Hey baby boy, you’re gonna be staying with Mr. Watkins for a while okay sweetie? Momma’s going to the Bahamas!!!”
[The text message reads. Mikey stares at his phone in disbelief then looks up at Charles who has a huge smile on his face.]
Watkins: “Now that that is settled, I believe it’s time to start proper wrestling training.”
[Charles stands up from his desk, rubbing his hands down his suit to straighten out any wrinkles before power walking to the door of his office.]
Watkins: “Come.”
[Charles demands as Mikey slips his phone in his pocket, still in disbelief that his mother would just leave him with the almost total stranger. Mikey follows Charles out, taking another glance at Ashley as they walk past the lobby, she smiles at him causing Mikey to quickly turn his head away in fear of any human interaction between himself and a member of the opposite sex. Mikey struggles to keep up with Charles’ determined stride as they walk down a long hallway on the first floor of Watkins Tower, finally stopping at two large double doors at the end of said hallway. Charles pushes the doors open as Mikey finally catches up to him, once the two reach their destination Mikey sees what appears to be a basketball court, converted into a Wrestling gym. Right on the half court line set a rather dingy looking wrestling ring, surrounded by a few punching bags and treadmills littered across the court. In the middle of the ring was a hulking man in an orange singlet, tossing a few smaller men to the ground off of collar and elbow lock ups. The big orange clad man notices Charles and Mikey standing beside the ring.]
“Alright fellas, that’s enough for today.”
[The smaller man all quickly flee from ringside as the big one steps out and over to Charles who begins to introduce his client to his new trainer.]
Watkins: “Mikey, this is…”
Mikey: ““The Big Man” Cedric Strong, former XWA Heavyweight Champion, I know exactly who he is.”
[Mikey cuts Charles off to answer excitedly. Charles looks to be confused and surprised that he was able to get a recognizable trainer at the low price he paid. Truth was while Cedric was at one time a star in the business, it appears the business has since passed him by, gone are the days of the big man brawlers dominating the industry. Replaced by flashy moves and matches that show off the competitors Work-Rates. Cedric simply smiles and nods at Mikey’s enthusiasm.]
Cedric: “Alright kid, you ready to get started?”
[Mikey nods as he balls his fists and pounds the air as if pounding them on a desk, Charles pats his client on the back before retreating back to his office as Cedric gets back in the ring, he motions for Mikey to meet him in the middle, which Mikey obliges.]
Cedric: “Alright kid.”
[Cedric and Mikey lockup in the middle of the ring, Cedric grabs Mikey’s left arm and places his right hand on Mikey’s back, tossing him into the ropes. Mikey screams in pain as he clutches his back, Cedric looks behind the young man and watches a noticeable red line begin to form on his back as Cedric chuckles.]
Cedric: “First time hitting the ropes hey kid?”
[Mikey nods slowly as he rubs his back in pain.]
Cedric: “Guess we’ll start there then. Start running.”
[Mikey looks at Cedric nervously, not really wanting to endure the same pain he just felt so soon.]
Cedric: “Run!”
[Cedric’s voice is booming as Mikey doesn’t hesitate this time, taking off and bouncing back and forth between the ropes, wincing every so often as Cedric paces around the ring beside him.]
Cedric: “So you got your first match in a couple weeks huh kid?”
[Michael nods without breaking his stride as the pain on his face is evident, he continues hitting opposite ends of the ropes at full speed.]
Cedric: “Tell me about your Opponent”
[Mikey just shrugs as he continues his movement, determined.]
Cedric: “You should always know your opponent, that’s lesson number one son.”
[Cedric stops pacing in the center of the ring as he puts his hand up while Mikey runs toward him, Mikey abruptly stops before running into his new trainer. Mikey puts his hands on his knees panting hard for a moment before standing up straight and catching his breath.]
Mikey: “They just call him Guy. He may be the only wrestler on the entire Project Honor roster smaller than me, honestly I’m not too worried about him Sir.”
[Cedric quickly grabs Mikey by the jaw, pulling his face closer as Mikey continues to try to catch his breath.]
Cedric: “Listen here son, everyone, man, woman, or child. It doesn’t matter, anybody that has the talent and the guts to step in the ring deserves respect, you got me?”
[Cedric releases his trainee as Mikey nods his head feeling slightly embarrassed.]
Mikey: “Yes Sir…I’m sorry, it’s not really that I don’t respect the guy or I mean Guy, I mean obviously he’s got more experience in the ring than I Am. It’s just there’s a lot of great talent in Project Honor, like Betsy Gallagher, or Emmanuelle. There’s a lot of scary talent like Arata Asakura, or that big monster Ozymandias.”
[Mikey shivers at the mention of Ozy’s name.]
Mikey: “So it’s not that I necessarily don’t respect Guy, or what he can do in the ring, it’s just that I’m nervous and honestly kind of excited to mix it up in the ring with some of those guys.”
[Cedric stares at Mikey for a brief moment of awkward silence before nodding his head slowly.]
Cedric:” That’s great kid, baby steps first though, ok?”
[Cedric gives Mikey a friendly pat on the arm as he smiles and nods.]
Cedric: “Now tell me what you know about this…What was the name again?”
Mikey: “Guy, his name is Guy.”
[Cedric looks confused for a moment before shaking it off.]
Cedric: “Alright then, tell me what you know about Guy.”
Mikey: “Well I guess he’s a delivery boy who they hired to give some of their newer guy’s ring time and exposure, but that doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous, he’s small and quick. And like you said, anyone who gets in that ring is dangerous.”
[Cedric stands with his hand on his chin, pondering a game plan.]
Cedric: “You said he’s smaller than you though, right?”
[Mikey nods in the affirmative as Cedric gets a huge grin on his face.]
Cedric: “Then it looks like for once in your life you're gonna be the bully kid, come here.”
[Cedric gestures for Mikey to lock up with him, Mikey does as the two men struggle in a collar and elbow tie-up, until Cedric overpowers Mikey, tossing him down to the mat.”
Mikey: “Whoa!”
[Mikey exclaims as he rubs his elbow which has turned red from hitting the mat.]
Cedric: “You like that one? That’s exactly what you’re gonna do kid, you’re gonna use your size to keep him down on the mat, can’t use his speed against you if he can’t get up right?”
[Mikey smiles and nods as he pulls himself up off the mat.]
Cedric: “Good, and I’m going to teach you how to do it, we’ll make a bully out of you kid. Now come on, again.”
[Cedric motions for Mikey to lock up with him once again, Mikey once again obliges, before quickly getting pushed back down to the mat, wincing in pain.]
Cedric: “This might take a while.”
[With that the scene fades.]
