ALL WORK AND NO PLAY [MAKES ELENA A DULL GIRL]
[Lake Tahoe, Nevada]
Be right back, taking a break.
It felt as absurd as it did sound. Elena DeDraca didn’t understand the concept of slowing down. Not now, not ever. For her it felt as if she was robbing herself of chances. In almost twenty years most of her breaks or time away was forced. And to a degree it felt exactly like that again.
Yeah, she had been hurt after this Inferno match. And the smell of burnt flesh was still filling her nostrils on the way back, but nothing so bad that she had to step away. Or at least that was her view on things. After the doctors checked on her, three times as Mark insisted, they were giving her the green light. She was eager to return to the next Fallout. But despite her controlling nature sometimes things change.
Life hits hard.
It was the look on Isabella’s face that made her change ways. The little girl grew up in this business and she was smart enough to know mama was alright. But something was different this time. She was clingy, not leaving Elena out of sight. And once more she realised that there were more important things than wrestling and her career. It was clear to the Fist of Hydra that she would forever be torn between two lives. Loving wife and mother and ruthless fighter.
Is it still worth it?
Absolutely! That was the only honest response she found herself. And even though every fibre inside of her body screamed for her to leave, she didn’t. Instead she called Arik Holt. Needless to say this was a highly odd conversation. Elena was used to DeMarco, sure he was a slack, but he was the known evil. Arik? An unfinished cake. A little insane, a little too sweet but definitely dangerous. But there was one more ingredient: Intelligence. He knew better than to anger his reigning and defending LEGACY champion. Her time away was permitted, probably also because she threatened to burn the company down. Rule with a hard hand.
And here she was, sitting in a house that wasn't her own- wearing a pyjama that definitely wasn't her style. Looking down on herself an amused grin formed on her face. She looked grotesque to say the very least. The pink bunnies stared back at her as if she was the joke. Somewhere in another room she heard noise, a safe sign that the rest of the house was slowly waking up. Three hours later than her.
Her focus returned to the lake resting in front of her. It was a beautiful view to say the least, the right place if you wanted to get in contact with your own emotions. If you wanted to. Which was something Elena DeDraca did put on the shelf for most of her life, but that was then- right? There was another noise behind her and then some cursing, the grin grew further.
“I didn’t wanna interrupt your mediating or whatever it is that you do…”
Nick Sanderson. Husband to Alexandra Kelly.. Father. And a former champion. Which was a short description of the man that stood behind the kitchen counter. But in the past years there was one achievement that mattered the most, at least to Elena. Friend.
“Meditation? Are you high? You have seen me try that several times and the brutal outcome. With a hint of envy I must admit I am still surprised that Alex gets through that on a daily basis. Speaking of, where is the ruler of this home?”
“I am the ruler, El. Well, when she is not in the house- but you get the idea. But to answer your question, she took the kids and your husband on a trip. I think she mumbled something about us being out of marshmallows.”
He opened one of the cupboards with a smile. There were at least 5 packs of those silent killers.
“I am shocked. She lied.”
Elena acted all surprised but it was almost impossible to hide the ever growing smile.
“The pleasures of being married to a colourful personality, right? But I think we have been set up the Pixie...”
“I am afraid you are right. I guess, this is where the all so wise, Nick Sanderson, will kick my ass. Or die trying.”
For a moment they both went silent but then Nick bursted out laughing. He was pressing buttons on the modern coffee machine, mumbling to himself. When his mug was filled he slowly wandered over to where Elena was located. He tried to follow her eyes, but it was almost impossible to figure out what she was staring at. Maybe the lake, maybe the forest- maybe things only she saw. In the end her gaze returned to him.
“So, I think I am ready for the lecture. Praise me with your knowledge, Mister Sanderson.”
“Lecture? You think that is what we are here for, don’t you? What am I supposed to tell you that you don’t already know, Elena? And more importantly, who am I to judge any of your decisions? We have been there, you remember? I know my ribs do.”
Livid pictures came to life in front of her inner eye. It was after Cyrus had broken her heart, once again. At this point she had stopped counting, but she knew it would have been for the last time. It was when she set the wedding chapel on fire, burning every bit of feeling she had left. Months later her friends would refer to it as pulling the trigger. Either way, it was Nick that sat with her for hours- without saying one word. He was making her feel uneasy, to a point she started talking. Screaming. And then they would fight. And like expected he didn’t go easy on her. He had a kind nature, but also strong beliefs. In the end everything broke. A mess of blood, tears and sweat.
Road to Redemption 2.0.
“I thought that is the reason why we are here and our spouses disappeared so mysteriously. Usually when I mess up, you are there to tell me- put me back on the right path.”
He looked at her with that well known intensive manner, sipping from his coffee. Then he smiled.
“Is that what you want? Someone telling you that you have gone wrong in the past months? Abandoning everything and everyone, doing things for yourself. Strictly for yourself. You know I can do that, Elena, I have done it so many times. But I think you are misunderstanding the situation.”
“I haven’t been deaf to the complaints…”
“There will always be those that try to kill your momentum, but I am not one of them. I have never lied to you and I am not starting to do so. It was a strange sensation watching your performance for the past half year. But not in a negative way, Elena. I think you have finally found yourself in this chaos called life. And if anyone tries to ruin that for you, fuck them. Easy and simple.”
The expression on her face was priceless, at least to him. It was a rare moment to catch someone like her speechless. But he did.
“Ever since I met Alexandra I have been linked with you too. I have gone with you through your biggest hits and misses. I have seen you struggle, not on a professional but personal level. Many times you have made decisions I didn’t understand, but they were yours. You have often enough sacrificed yourself to make everyone around you happy. But when I look at you now, I don’t see that girl anymore.”
“People are not so happy about this, Nick. And I don’t even mean my friends or the rest of the family I got. Not even the fans, they have always been loyal to me. More the roster of the company I work for. To say I am the least liked person there…”
Nick’s eyebrow rose. There was honest surprise in his words.
“Least liked person? So what, Elena? When did it ever matter to you if anyone liked you? Especially when you look at the obvious reasons why people can’t stop talking about you. Or the way they try to reduce your success. It’s hard to believe that I am the one that has to tell you this, considering you are the smarter one...but it’s called envy.”
She was ready to interrupt him, protesting even, but he wouldn’t let her. Instead he placed his mug on the table, standing up.
“Look at the list of people that you have beat since signing your contract. From the one we won’t ever talk about again. To people like Mark Hunter, who indeed seems to be the only one with a spine. He took defeat like a man. And your latest hit, what was his name again? Oh yeah, Jason Long. A boy that thought he was ready to rule the world- but was left with licking his wounds. The thing is this, people in this business often share one similarity. They all wanna be the best, forgetting there can only be one best. So hating you, buttercup, is so easy. In and out of the company. But if anything, that should be the last bit of motivation a queen like you needs.”
Once again he outsmarted her on a level that not many would understand. She kicked after him, but missed him by a few inches. In a dramatic way he rolled his eyes.
“I guess we can’t have it all, right? Being liked and being ourselves. But you are right, Nick, I am good with the way I am now. I never thought I would say anything like that, it was a rough road to travel on. At points I didn’t think I would ever make it to the finish line, but I fucking did. Despite the struggles I called my life.”
“Look at you being all Zen. There were times where you would have fought me about this, not accepting that you deserve all of this. Neither of them has walked a mile in your shoes. The human race is quick to shit on the things they don’t understand- or are jealous of. You, Elena DeDraca, are the mountain to climb in that company. They will come at you strong, every fucking time, but you will always have the right answer.”
He winked at her fully aware the door had opened behind him. He heard his beloved wife shouting instructions to Mark, who didn’t dare to contradict. The two little girls were busy with whatever toys they got. Nick gave her one more reassuring smile before walking towards his wife. He left Elena with the chance of admiring the situation a little longer and she did.
Don’t feel guilty for doing what’s best for you, Elena.
HERE’S JOHNNY!
[Portland, Oregon]
Be the best version of yourself.
Change your view on what best means.
Sometimes you have to rip yourself apart in order to rebuild a better version. And while Elena would say she had done that many times, she hadn’t. Not till now. It was painful but at the same time freeing. If you had nothing to feel bad about anymore, that was when true freedom had a chance to evolve.
This roadtrip had been one of her craziest ideas so far, but thanks to her friends- she didn’t have to do it alone. It was Lara that made the connection, making sure that their destination was freed of all visitors at the point. Only a handful of staff and the director himself remained there. The Timberline Lodge. Why exactly would they go there? For one, it was Oregon- which wasn't exactly a dream destination. Although every horror fan probably knew the Lodge under a different name.
Overlook Hotel.
The endless halls where Jack Torrance tried to murder his wife Wendy and his son Danny. A movie. Yeah, maybe- but one that remained in people’s heads for decades. After Lara had used her charm on the director once more they were given the key to their room. 217.
“It wasn't easy to get this one, darling.”
“Wasn't it 237? I mean in the movie at least… .”
“We all love the movie, D. But if we wanna do this right, we go after the book.”
Alexandra’s voice wasn't more than a whisper when she grabbed the key from Lara, hopping off in her typical manner. Elena herself had remained quiet, admiring the atmosphere of this place. Her eyes were glued to the huge elevator that rested in front of them. It wasn't exactly the same, but it came close. All four of them stepped in at the same time, pushing the button. Much to her dismay they had changed the carpet after filming. The style of the 60’s was fully gone.
“I half- heartedly expected the red, orange and black.”
“Me too.”
All four of them laughed while walking down the corridor, looking for their room. The same corridor where the scary twins showed themselves to Danny Torrance. Inviting them to play with them, forever. Alexandra, who still had the keys, was the first to arrive at their room. She took a deep breath before unlocking it. And even though the room looked nothing like they expected, the hair on the back of their necks began to tickle.
“I wanna discover the rest of the hotel.”
“You wanna discover the bar, love.”
“That is kind of the rest of the hotel, so shut up.”
Said and done. Three members of Hydra had left the room, leaving their leader all by herself. Which was a rareness that Elena welcomed more than she would ever admit. It left her time to unpack and enjoy the view from the huge window. In the near distance the mountains were already white. Without willingly doing so, or noticing, she had walked into the bathroom. For a moment, closing her eyes, seeing the old lady in front of her eyes. Stepping out of the bathtub, seducing Jack Torrance. Men were too easy.
Elena took a step further towards the tub, pulling the trendy curtain aside. Without giving it another thought she stepped inside, sitting down. Once more she allowed herself to absorb the atmosphere and those strange vibes. Some people would never understand this sort of preparation, people like Syndicate.
Sorry, not sorry.
“Some would call me a nerd and I don’t even wanna say they are wrong. It doesn’t matter the situation or the circumstances, I like to remain true to the classics. Which indeed makes me a classic too. I don’t fancy the era we live in. Nothing seems to last or matter. Not the music, not the trends and definitely not the people. But that is life, right? Everything is endless and there is no time for standing still. So while everyone is hunting for the next big thing, I will remain the same. The girl with the black clothes, the dramatic make- up and the worn out Doc Martens. I think that is a rather accurate description of my looks. But what about what’s on the inside? Did anyone ever try to take a closer look without being a judgy asshole? Doubtful. So I welcome you to another episode of: I am Elena DeDraca and the reasons why I am better than you.”
She stretched out in the tub, crossing her legs. All in all not the worst position she had been in.
“How have you been, Syndi? Good I hope, although it is hard to tell when it comes to you. It seems to me that you always find something to complain about, which really doesn’t make you look all that manly. You are not very good when it comes to handling defeat, unfortunately that is everything I see in your future. Hear me out, boy, I don’t even say that to be mean- but I am all for honesty. Beating around the bush has never been my style. Putting on a mascarade to protect someone else's feelings, is not only weak but it's also unworthy. So I have taken the time to look at your latest hits. You couldn’t overcome Jason Long, yet you still managed to get this title match. I wonder how that makes you feel, being rewarded for not getting the job done. You know I am maybe not Jason’s biggest fan, but compared to you? He is a diamond. But despite him thinking he is the King, I burnt down his throne along with his little kingdom. Because that is what a champion does.”
“Now think it through, Syndicate. You couldn’t reach his level, how do you think you come close to mine? The first time we encountered, you lost. And everyone had to hear about it for weeks. How everything was so unfair. How your chances would have been better under different circumstances and so on. But do you really believe that? Or you just try to save the last bit of pride you have. I would think the latter. The truth is, I have been on the tip of your tongue ever since. But don’t you worry, you are in the best company when it comes to that. Tara. Ozy. You all follow the same strategy to get my attention, only difference? They are more successful doing so. The moment this match got announced I had to laugh. Knowing how you will come up with another excuse when things don’t go your way. And they won’t. I will not give you the illusion that there is a chance for you. Not when it comes to me, sunshine. I don’t care about the plans you make behind closed doors, or what others whisper in your ear trying to build your ego- you are not even half the man you could be.”
Elena slowly licked over her lips before rolling her neck. Her long, dark hair was falling over her naked shoulders. For a moment her expression looked almost friendly.
“I will be honest with you, Arik Holt booked a great card. Not only because of the people he put on it, but the matches he created. Most people know that if there is a Halloween enthusiast out there- then it's me. For me this is the biggest holiday of the year. So thanks Arik for being so thoughtful. What about you, Syndi? Did you like to dress up and go trick or treating? And more importantly what did you dress up for? No wait, I don’t wanna hear about it. It might bore me to death and that would mean an automatic win for you. But you are no kid anymore and neither am I. Are you aware where we are at this very moment? History took place here. And even though Arik didn’t know, although he has stalkerish tendencies, he picked my favourite movie. The Shining has been with me ever since I read the book. The main question is though, what is your role in this whole scenario?”
“You don’t have the guts to be a Wendy or Danny, you are no survivor. But you also don’t have the balls to be Jack. Which leaves you with only one option. A ghost. A long forgotten memory that no one misses. And even though you will try to deny it, you always knew this would be your destiny. This isn’t about your past or mine, this is about the here and now. And no matter how hard you stomp your foot, the truth remains right here. I am the better performer. The better fighter. And will always be the better champion. And while I am fully aware that my time will come, I can reassure you that it will be on my terms. I will be in charge till I decide it is time for a change. Write it down, make it a daily reminder. And when you are already on it, make a few copies for the other loudmouths. Those that try too hard without ever becoming head of the table.”
Somewhere in the bedroom she heard a noise, but it didn’t bother her. This was an old hotel, the walls had stories to tell. The good, the bad and the tragic. It was all a matter of perspective. For a moment she looked through the door frame that connected the rooms, but then shrugged her shoulders.
“I said it several times in the past, but I can say it again. I never try to make things personal in this business. It is my job to beat people up, showing them where they are supposed to stand in the food chain. But every now and then I forget myself, darling, just like when it comes to you. And I am in doubt that you even understand why. But I am a generous woman, so I will enlighten you. I am highly allergic to two things. Weakness and Liars. And you sadly combine those things. Instead of bettering yourself, you keep looking for excuses. Which also makes you a liar. So think of me what you want, but try to get your facts straight. Will you complain that you had to compete while I was taking a break? Or the fact that I as the LEGACY champion don’t have to appear at every show? Although we might end up with another tale about how you have been screwed. A broken record that didn’t play the right tunes in the first place. You see the problem, don’t you?”
“I shall not pretend that I never struggle, Syndicate. Because I do, probably more than most. But there is a switch inside of me that I have full control over. Which is another thing we call professional. No matter my troubles, the moment I step inside a ring- it is all forgotten. All my flaws become my strengths. All my doubts become my inner motivators. So I can promise you this, once more, you will get the best version of me. But at the same time this means you will fall harder than you ever did. I will eat you alive, bit by bit- like you are my favourite meal on this planet. And it doesn’t matter where I will have that meal, sweetheart. Inside a ring, in a parking lot or in an abandoned hotel. We play by my rules. If there are any rules in the first place. It’s hard to tell when someone like Arik is in charge, but you can always hope. I will once more bring that horror that you have been fleeing from, not very successfully but still. This shall be your reminder why I have survived for this long.”
There was this noise again, but this time she knew exactly what it was. Her family, the members of HYDRA, tried to prank her. The scratching on the outside door became louder, her smile wider. Knowing the girls, they probably grabbed an axe, ready to give her the chills.
My girls.
“No matter what you do, Syndicate- make it better than last time. Make it worth it. Sometimes it is not even about winning or losing, but all about seeing yourself. Do you wanna be a wanker for the rest of your life? A shadow of the man you could have been? Or do you finally get your shit together and accept your fate? A lot of questions that might burn a few wires in your head. I understand it is not easy to bend the knee, especially when your ego is in the way. But sometimes, for personal growth, it is the only thing you can do. Lord knows how many more chances you will get. Not only at this title, but in this business. Neither of us is invincible or indestructible. And although I hope you are aware I will still tell you, time is working against us. There will be others and you will be forgotten. So get your shit together and despite your chances, deliver. I will break you either way, there is no doubt about that. But I rather break the strong ones.”
Elena was interrupted once more, the scratching had turned into a hammering noise. With some sort of annoyance she lifted herself out of the bathtub, walking towards the door. Silence. Hammering. Silence. Without thinking twice she opened the door, smiling. Just like expected HYDRA was out there, each of them carrying an axe.
“What took you so long, darling? Pix was close to playing the HERE'S JOHNNY scene.”
Deirdre, who carried an extra axe handed it over to her, winking. Elena felt the minimal weight in her hand. She looked at the wooden handle and the shimmering metal. A good feeling.
“You know how it is, business and such. Destroying dreams and collecting the balls of big guys. A normal day at the office.”
She once more turned towards the camera, the axe now right next to her face. The smile on her face was dangerous. Like many other times she winked.
“I will see you soon, Syndicate. And with that… “
Elena stepped closer to the camera, indeed so close that she could touch it with the axe. It rested in her hand, ready for an attack.
“... you are welcome.”
