It has really been a fucked off day. Hel, it had been a fucked off year. From the bullshit start of it, until now? Yeah, 2021 could go fuck itself for all she cared.
Oh, there were a handful of things that were good about the year. The birth of her granddaughters, Dru becoming President of the NYC charter of the Wolves, her winning the Ascension Championship Belt at Project: HonorâŠ
But, the biggest let down⊠The biggest hurt and disappointment.. Was the ending of her marriage. She wasnât left with any other choice. She and Forge had just⊠grown apart. How did you make a one-sided relationship work? It had gotten to the point where she didnât even feel married anymore.
And maybe that was the problem. Maybe they had been married too long. She often wondered how her parents stayed married until they died. Forty fucking years. It perplexed her. So much so, that she pulled her phone out and shot a text off to her twin brother.
How the fuck did Mom and Dad tolerate each other enough to stay married for forty-fucking-years?, she hit send on the message and slipped her phone back into her back pocket.
She supposed what was causing her mood was that she was back in Baton Rouge going over the damage to her shop after Hurricane Ida hit the state. She just stood in the middle of her shop and wanted to cry. All that work. All those hours⊠Gone. It was one thing to lose her career due to her hand getting fucked up in a match. But, it was another to lose everything to Mother Nature.
She felt⊠defeated. She moved to one of the chairs that was laying on its side and righted it. She didnât even bother trying to clean it off before she sat down on it. She let her shoulders slump down and she put her head into her hands.
She felt her phone vibrate, but didnât move to check it. She just figured it was Leif answering her with some nonsense about how things would get better, blah blah blah. She just had to give it time, blah blah blah. She really wasnât in the mood to listen to his âLife is Amazingâ âStop and Smell the Rosesâ rhetoric. So, she just didnât bother to look.
She was just so.. Over it.

He watched her go into the ruined tattoo shop. He had been following her all across the United States, and the world, as he stalked her. Now, did he call it stalking? No. Of course he didnât call it stalking. He didnât see it as stalking.
No, he saw it as⊠Learning.
How else did someone go about finding out every little thing about their prey? They followed. They stalked. He was the predator; She the prey.
He watched as she slumped in the chair and frowned. He didnât like seeing her upset like this. So, he took a chance. As he was walking âcasuallyâ down the street, he âhappenedâ to glance inside her shop and ânoticedâ her.
âExcuse me, Miss?â, he called out to her. âEverything ok?â
Robi looked up as an unknown male voice broke the brooding silence sheâd fallen into. â...Huh?â, she started. âOh, heh⊠I guess.â She looked around the shop and couldnât stop the laugh that spilled past her lips. âSeems Life has seen fit to kick me while Iâm down.â
But, she forced a smile at him as he appeared genuinely concerned, âBut, I have Faith that the Norn has a plan for me at the behest of the All Father and They will see to his wishes.â
When she spoke of her beliefs, his eyes seemed to darken for a moment. But only for a split second. It was a âblink and you miss itâ type of look. It was over and it was replaced by a look of surprise and, what some would akin to, happiness.
âNorse Pagan, I take it?â, he asked. Almost giddily. Too giddy, some would say. âNot many of Us around these parts.â
She gave a soft laugh as she nodded, âYes. I am. Born and raised. On my Fatherâs side. Mother was Celtic. They both taught me The Path. And then allowed me to choose which I wanted to follow. I knew, growing up, that my Path lied with the All Father. So, it was an easy decision for me.â
While they talked, he stepped inside the shop and made himself appear to not be a threat by staying on the âcustomerâ side of the receptionistâs counter. Leaning against it, âSo, which do you practice? Seidr, Odinism or Asatru?â
Robi tilted her head slightly and smiled, âAll of them.â
Both at the same time saying, âAs any true Volva does.â Before falling into a bit of laughter.
âThough, I do tend to lean more towards the Seidr side than anything. But, I do understand there needs to be balance in all things. In all aspects of life. So, I give just as much attention to the other two as I do Seidr.â, she looked him over. He seemed harmless enough. âAnd what about you? Which Path do you follow?â
âMe?â, he asked. Playing at being shocked that she was interested. âAsatru. My own father was the Chieftain of his Clan before he died. And then I took over.â
Robi seemed rather impressed to be in the company of a Clanâs Chieftain, âWell⊠My Lord, welcome to what's left of my shop.â She finally stood up and made her way over to the shattered counter and held her hand out in greeting. âNameâs Valkyrie.â
He took her hand and brought it up to his lips and placed a kiss to the back of it. Only to straighten up and give her a âshockedâ look, âValkyrie? As in Project: Honorâs Ascension Champ, Valkyrie?â
She laughed softly again and simply nodded, âOne and the same.â
âHo-Ly shit! Iâm shakinâ hands with a true Icon! And Norse Pagan, tâboot! Man, wait âtil the guys back at the gym hear âbout this!â, he seemed to be laying it on thick.
The back door burst open, and in slogged the dark haired mountain! He yanked his hat off, slinging a little water behind him before he looked up to see Robi deep in conversation with another man. âHey Robs, I donât think itâs all a loss, I think I could fix⊠Oh, shit, sorry.â He stood behind her, by the looks of his cut, he was of the same club. Until he turned, showing the bright New York blazoned across the back.
Fuck! How did he miss the big oaf!! He was suddenly very fucking angry. But covered it up well by dropping Robiâs hand and taking a step back as Memphis came in from the back. Seemed startled by the âinterruptionâ, âOh, sorry! I didnât mean to interrupt anything.. I just.. I saw her sitting here lookinâ like someone shattered her heart and had to see if she was ok.â
Robi turned to look at Memphis and a smile, a true smile formed, âHey! Oh! Uh, Memphis, this isâŠâ She turned to look back at the guy and stopped, â... Oh fuck.. Sorry, I didnât even get your name.â
âOh! Where are my manners?â, he held his hand out to Memphis. âNjal. Njal Bjornson.â
Memphis reached out with his massive hand and grabbed the other man's tightly. Shaking him rather vigorously, âNice to meeâcha. Iâm Memphis. What brings you out here?â He eyed the man, leery of anyone coming a calling on his friends and family. Especially ones he cared for.
In his pocket, his phone buzzed but for now he ignored it. He was purposefully studying the man, Njal. Mental note taken for later research, possibly. Or if a hunt were required. âRobs, Iâm not one to rush ya, but you wanted me to remind you of the thing. Later.â He looked at Robi, she could see his skepticism but he purposefully kept his focus on the other man.
Njal looked back to Memphis and then to Robi, âBorn in Norway; raised in Louisiana. Was in the city for some business and happened by.. Seen Miss Valkyrie and well.. Here we are.â
Robi caught to look in Memphisâ eyes and nodded when he reminded her of their impending trip, âYes. Are we all packed?â She then turned to look back to Njal and smiled, apologetically, âIâm sorry. We only stopped by so he could look at the shop to see if it was a total loss before heading to the airport. But, maybe you can stop by again after the renovations? Your next tattoo is on the house.â
They made their good-byes and agreements and after Njal left, Robi turned to look back at Memphis and gave him a weird look. âOdd man. Seemed nice enough, though.â, she shrugged lightly. But then moved over to drape her arms across his shoulders and grinned up at him. âNow, are you truly ready for this trip?â

The scene opened up to her sitting at a make-up mirror. âHeimdallrâ by Munknorr played in the background. She began to draw a black line across her face. Separating the top half from the bottom. That done, she then began to paint the lower part of her face with black face paint.
âWhat is there to say? Things that Iâve already said before? Is there really anything new that needs to be said? Especially to you, Slade. I may not have actually pinned you when I won this title⊠But won I did. You were just too slow with getting Savannah to drop out. I made sure that everyone knew I had bite to my bark. That the growl was more than just a warning. I made sure that everyone stood up and took notice. And, so far, Iâve held onto this belt. Itâs something I plan on continuing to hold onto. Now, that doesnât mean I donât respect you. Because you did put up a hell of a fight.â
She continued to paint her face. This time with a mix of white paint and then black. Painting runes in strategic places upon her face.
âThanks for the use of your back, though.â
She grinned darkly and winked at the camera through the mirror.
âNow, the one that Iâm wondering why heâs even trying is you⊠Mr. Adora. Whatâs your play? What stakes do you have in this fight? Slade, I get. Slade I understand. But you? Some defunct cult leader who thinks that winning the Ascension belt will what.. Ascend you to your little group of sycophants? What, will they see you as some kind of Messiah? Iâm not quite sure thatâs going to happen, Lesley. In fact, Iâm almost positive that itâs not.â
She finished up the make-up she was working on and stood up to face the camera.
âYou see⊠You wonât get this belt unless you do one thingâŠâ
She sneered lightly and let out a low growl. Baring fangs to the camera.
âYouâll need to rip it from my cold⊠dead⊠hands. And even then⊠Youâll pray to the Gods you did the very thing Iâm suggesting you doâŠâ
From the darkness the others appeared around her.
â...RunâŠâ
And the camera goes⊠Black.
