It was hot in Indiana on this particular day, the kind of heat that makes one’s balls stick to the side of their legs. But that didn’t bother me so much because I was on cloud nine. After finally obtaining the Ascension championship I had flown home, to present my championship to the only person who cherished it more than I did, my son. The hefty paycheck from winning such a prestigious award got the baby momma off my back as well, so to say that I felt like I finally made it? Would be a lie.
“ Oh no! He reverses it!”
The sound of my body hitting the mat of the makeshift wrestling ring vibrates through the backyard of my old neighborhood home. Kadence was laid out on my chest, having just reversed a suplex I was going for. I slap my hand on the mat twice and then kick out.
“ Dad is still in this! Can you believe it?”
“ No! “ he screams, before really acting it up - banging his fists on the mat and then looking towards the camera, well aware of what was going on. I get up to one knee, and motion to the corner of the ring - pointing at my Ascension championship.
“ Hit me with it. “
With a confused, almost worried look on his face Kadence brings his fingers up to his lips. I smile at him, reassuring him that I’ll be fine. And before too long he runs over and lifts the championship - his fragile muscles extruding out as it takes his all to lift the belt. He lets out a roar and comes at me, putting his entire little body into the shot that genuinely sends me to my back. It didn’t hurt, but I was pretty proud of how hard he hit me.
Kadence grabs my leg and I lift it for him as I count to three on the mat.
“ AND YOUR NEEEEEW ASCENSION CHAMPION! KAAAADEEEENCEEEE DEEEESTRUUUUUCTIOOOON!”
The sounds of his laughter and childish screams fill my heart with an unprecedented amount of joy. It was in these moments that I contemplated the idea of “ Having made it” But with the camera looming overhead, I knew that there still more to do.
Still, though, I took the time to cherish this moment with my child, raising him up on my shoulders and parading him around the ring like the champion he was. As I set him back down on the mat, I take a seat with my back up against the ropes, the heat getting to me as I wipe the sweat from my glistening brow - not even realizing that there was blood trickling from it.
“ Daddy bleeding! “ Kadence announces to the world, he wasn’t scared as this was an image he had seen many times before. No, when Kadence spoke about his father being bloodied, there was a sense of excitement in his voice - the same kind of the excitement that I get when I’m out in that ring.
Now I don’t know if that part is actually true, but I’d like to believe it so.
I check my forehead and sure enough the little fucker busted me open.
“ Well would you look at that, K. We’ll make a deathmatch wrestler out of you yet. “
We smile at each other, but that smile is quickly broken up by the hard tone of Clarissa yelling from the porch.
“ The fuck you will Mason! Kadence, get inside and get ready for dinner.”
Letting out a groan and rolling his eyes, Kadence picks himself up off the mat and goes to grab for the Ascension Championship.
“ Ah. Ah. Ah… I need that, you just run your little ass inside before mom puts you through a table. “
“But I’m the champion!” He protests.
I mean he had me there, he had just won the championship fair and square. I glance up at the camera recording us and smirk.
“ I’m just gonna’ borrow it for work babe, now go. “
Kadence huffs and puffs, but after a few moments, he exits the ring, making sure to stop and wave to the camera. I watch as he runs up the porch, and into the house that I spent a lot of time at growing up. It was my grandparents, and I had inherited it after they died. I Built the ring that I was now sitting in, but what with my growing rise in fame and not being able to be here all the time - I had given it to Clarissa so that she could raise our son in it.
Letting out a sigh I reached into the pocket of my black and yellow basketball shorts and pulled out my pack of smokes, lighting one up and tossing the pack into the grass along with my lighter. I look at the camera with squinting eyes, taking in a drag of my cigarette before tucking my head and rolling forward so that I’m kneeling on one knee.
“ Do you know why I let you all in on my private life? Why I’m so open to the idea of documenting my precious time here at home? Because this right here? Is who I am, it’s what makes me… Me.”
Reaching down and grabbing my championship, I let it rest on my shoulder as I push a few strands of hair from my face, blood from my forehead flinging backward with it. The sun was slowly starting to set, giving the atmosphere the kind of purplish orange hue that you could only get in the more rural parts of Indiana.
“ It’s what won me this. “
Glancing down at my championship, I couldn’t help but get a cocksure grin across my face - my eyes narrowly darting back towards the camera as I wiggled my lip ring from behind a closed mouth.
“ I guess you could say that I’m grounded…. I don’t need to call myself a god, think I’m scarier than I am, or walk around living in the past like some sort of bad Ground Hogs day parody. Because I know exactly who I am, and I’ll happily show the world every single part of me. “
With two loud cracks of my knees, I push myself up to my feet. The blood now trickling past my five o’clock shadow and down onto my bare chest, mixing in with the sweat. I go to wipe it away, but just end up smearing it.
“ This so-called Clusterfuck of a match is filled to the brim with people who need to prove themselves to you… Some, are just now getting the chance, while others have failed time and time again. But all alike they are coming in here with something to gain… And I’m the only one with something to lose.
I know it, I was each and every one of them just a few weeks ago. So I know what it feels like to be given an opportunity and wanting to sink your fucking teeth into it, wanting to lick the plate clean - really get your money’s worth! “
The sounds of my footsteps bang across the makeshift plyboard mat, it wasn’t the best ring - but it was stained with the blood of many friends and foes. Memories that I would cherish for a lifetime, all beaten into the worn-out ropes I now ran my hand across.
“But you won’t make a feast out of me.”
My words cold, calculating as I glare at the camera through the corner of my eye. Removing my hand from the ropes I take another drag of the blood-stained Marlboro light before flicking it off into the grass.
“ A fight isn’t won in the ring, it’s won before you even step foot in it. That’s why I hold all of this so near and dear to my heart, that’s why I show all of you people this side of me. Because it’s important, not just to me, but to you as well. See if I am to be beaten, I want my opponents to have every tool at their disposal. That way they can make no excused when I fucking destroy them, when I take my size 16 boot and wreck their fucking head with it! When you get decapitated by me, I want it to be at your best… Because there’s no honor in destroying lesser men, lesser women. “
Whipping myself around, I get my face real close to that camera - spit flying from my lips.
“ If you ain’t want it! And I mean really want it? Then don’t step in the ring with me. Because I’ll take your head off like that! “
Snapping my fingers and taking a few steps back, that cocky grin returns to my lips. I couldn’t help it at this point.
“ A lot of you think that this championship is just a stepping stone, to something greater. You want to use it and twist it to your own needs. The Levi’s, and the Syndicate’s will tell you how they’re above this championship, how gods like them could never see an ant-like I from way up high on their pedestal of bullshit!
And it’s true, I’m not a god. I’m just a man. A man with a family, A man with a sense of pride, A man who will do anything to keep what he’s earned. I worked my way to this place at the table, I beat down the likes of Lesley Adora, Daniel Horror, and Re De Las Sambras. Threw them into dumpsters, dooming them to the explosion! Because I needed this championship, I needed everything that came with it.
I’m sure you need it to Bam, Curtis, Latoya… The Blade of Nagasaki, and whatever the fuck a pandalike is. I’m sure you all need this championship! What about you Bezerk? Do you need it? Do you think just because you dress in a shitty Halloween costume, have a few laughs, make a few jokes, that you think you deserve what I’ve earned? “
Just when I was getting into my groove, Clarissa cuts through my preaching from the porch.
“ Are you going to come inside and eat? “
As I turn around, I see her with Kadence in her arms, motioning for me to come in.
“ Just stay there a second, I’ll be right there. “A comforting chuckle escapes my lips, as I look back to the camera.
Stepping towards the center of the ring and spreading my legs in a power stance as I raise my championship above my head with one arm.
“ For weeks I busted my ass off to get this championship, I beat a lot of guys who are in this chaotic ass match. So I don’t care if you’re a new face, or an old one. I don’t care if this a tag-team match because the only thing that matters to me is that I don’t get eliminated, that I pull through, that I fucking go the distance and retain! Because truth be told? Just because I have this belt, doesn’t mean I feel like I’ve made it…
No. I refuse to feel that until I’ve won it all.
This championship right here, me winning it? Was just the end of the first chapter, and this match here is the beginning of a new one. One where I kick the head off of anyone who gets in my way.
My name is Mason Destruction, and I am your Ascension Champion. And this?”
The camera pans out as I let the championship slide down my arm, raising out my hands so from the angle Kadence and Clarissa are between them.
“ Is my life. “
“ Oh no! He reverses it!”

“ Hit me with it. “
